Okay, I feel like I need to put my thoughts here so I can stop talking about this to all of my friends. I have read a few articles about other's experiences doing the detox. If you are interested in know why I did it, here is an article explaining the way our brains react to all the added sugars in our lives. (Please excuse the over-sexualized stock image of nonpareils)
The deal: My sister and I were cutting all added sugar out of our daily food consumption. No honey, agave, sugar or HFCS (which I cut out years ago). All natural sugars were allowed, so plenty of fruit and vegetables. The duration is supposed to be 10 days.
Day One: Pretty tough, I'm not going to lie. The headache started halfway through the day. I was so HUNGRY all day. All I kept doing was thinking about food. I needed food in my mouth at all times. I ended up eating almost twice as much as I normally do. Unable to drink hot coffee without sugar. I initially thought that maybe it was the caffeine that I was missing that was making my head hurt, but I've stopped having coffee for a week before for other reasons and it didn't effect me this way.
Day Two: The headache persisted. The hunger persisted. I had tea to replace coffee. I was tired and grumpy.
Day Three: Headache day three, but not nearly as prominent. I don't feel any difference yet except a little irritable.
Day Four-Nine: I woke up feeling GREAT. I was able to concentrate the entire day. I was focused, even tempered, not hungry anymore. I was energized. I noticed that I didn't have the afternoon lull that I was so used to experiencing pre-detox. I also realized that iced coffee without sugar was much easier to drink, so I enjoyed a week of iced coffee with almond milk.
Day Ten: Birthday party day. My niece and god-daughter's birthday party was on the tenth and final day of the detox. Let's explain just how much candy, cake and cookies were at this party. I believe a lot of my desire to eat any of these was out of habit. Much like the first summer I gave up meat and attended barbecues. Luckily there was a wide array of other foods that were 100% sugar free that was equally delicious. At midnight after the party, I allowed myself to eat a brownie. Usually that's a gateway to inhaling an entire cookie platter BUT I was done. One brownie was all I needed.
Aftermath: I was able to drink hot coffee again. I didn't add sugar, just creamer that had sugar in it and it was delicious. No extra sugar needed. That's literally the only added sugar I've had today. I lost 4lbs, but that wasn't my objective. I'm glad I did this and will probably continue to try and eat this way always.
