holiday mayhem!

Hello everyone!  Happy Friday!  It has been a whirlwind the past few months and I want to apologize for falling off the face of the earth.  I have been working on some great projects that will soon be added to the portfolio, but i wanted to share the process with you and keep you up to date.

First.  I benched the Girl in the Red Dress until after the holiday season.  The sketches I was working on didn't quite sit right with me, so I'm going back to the drawing board.

Second.  I finally started a self portrait.  I have been toying with the idea of it for a while.  Other than the sketch I did a few months ago, I have not done a self portrait since college and I'm a free model, right?  Why not utilize the sweet face I have and put some paint down?  I love square things, so I picked up a square canvas (24x24) and got to work.  Here are some progression pics so far...

The beginning of paintings is always a little disconcerting if you don't start with a full under painting, especially faces.  I had to tackle the nose and mouth ASAP because they looked super weird and I couldn't envision myself that way.  So unnaturally I worked from the center outward.  So far this is three sittings and about 8 hours in.

Next on the agenda!  My good friend, Joe, has connected me with someone to get some paintings done this holiday season for a relative.  I graciously complied and we have been working together on ideas for a few weeks.  We came up with final compositions and got things rolling.  They are not complete yet, but here are some progression pictures:

Both paintings are 16x20 and I wanted to start with under paintings so the colors are richer and to give the paintings more depth.  I will hopefully have the elephant done this weekend and knock out the flower arrangement next week.

In other, but related news!  My new friend, Thomas Palumbo, has featured some of my previous artwork on his blog.  He covers mostly current pop culture happenings and is an all around great guy, even if he thought I was a guy initially.  (We connected through a friend and have yet to meet, the downside of a A-sexual name)  Check out his blog here and feel free to join his mailing list (on the bottom right corner of his page) to keep up with his latest reviews.  I encourage it.

Well, that's all for now friends, I have a movie (THOR!) to catch.  Have a wonderful and safe weekend!
